PSU Typing Test Evaluation Rules & Key Differences
PSU typing tests follow standard government evaluation norms but differ by organisation. Key rules to know:
- Qualifying Gate: The typing test is a mandatory qualifying round. A high written exam score does NOT compensate for failing the typing test. Both must be cleared independently.
- Speed Measurement: Net WPM = (Total Correct Characters / 5) / Duration in minutes. Some PSUs use key depression counts (KDPH) instead — 35 WPM ≈ 10,500 KDPH.
- ECIL / Defence PSUs (40 WPM, Restricted Backspace): These organisations apply stricter standards. Candidates cannot go back to correct previous words. Accuracy from the first keystroke is critical.
- Oil & Mining PSUs (35 WPM, Unrestricted Backspace): IOCL, ONGC, HPCL, and Coal India allow backspace. However, net speed after error deductions must still clear the 35 WPM threshold.
- Error Tolerance: A permissible error ceiling of 5% applies broadly. Exceeding this rate may disqualify a candidate even if their gross WPM is above the threshold.
